If your car is out of action it can be a pain, especially if you’re a driving instructor and it’s how you earn your living. If your car is in the garage because it’s been hit by an uninsured driver it somehow feels even worse. Someone that doesn’t believe the rules apply to them, and doesn’t care about the chaos they’re causing to other people has stopped your business.
It’s no wonder that most motorists would like speed cameras to check for insurance, MOT and other road traffic offences. It feels a little bit ‘big brother’ to have something checking your details every time you drive, but police cars are already fitted with ANPR technology allowing them to find those uninsured drivers and get them off the road.
Most people are happy with this level of surveillance. According to IAM RoadSmart’s annual safety culture report, out of the 2,000 motorists surveyed, 89 per cent “support the use of safety camera technology to check for insurance, MOT and road tax offences.” With estimates of around 1 million uninsured drivers on Britain’s roads, it would be a good way to stop this trend.
