The end of the Ford Fiesta
The Ford Fiesta has been a popular small car since it’s release in 1976. Back then the Ford production line was in Spain, and Henry Ford II personally chose the name to reflect the Spanish culture.
It has always been a very popular car, as it’s small and economical to run, and Ford has always included new innovations in each new generation. It was the first small car to have ABS, and has always been ahead of other small cars in terms of safety and economy. This fact is why the Fiesta is one of the most popular cars for driving instructors, who need a reliable, safe, small car that’s economic to run and easy to manoeuvre. If all of this is true, and the Fiesta is still selling well why are Ford stopping production?
End of the Ford Fiesta
Ford will stop production in the middle of next year. This is due to Ford changing the cars it makes ahead of the 2030 deadline for all new cars in the UK to be electric. A spokesman for Ford said that it was “accelerating our efforts to go all in on electrification”, and so the company is reviewing the portfolio of cars it has on offer. Ford is investing $50bn (£43.bn) globally through 2026 to electrify its fleet, now says it is on track to deliver more than two million electric vehicles annually by 2026.
Will it work?
This is very impressive, but with no electric model of the Fiesta, Ford look like they will be replacing it with the electric Puma. It does make me wonder if this will work, as the Fiesta’s nearest rival in the learner and new driver market is the Vauxhall Corsa, and this has a fully electric model. I don’t know if the Puma will fill the gap in the market left by the Fiesta, as it’s larger and slightly more expensive to buy. I’m sure many driving instructors out there will miss the Ford Fiesta, but we all have to look forward to driving fully electric cars in the future.
